What is a Ureteric Stent?
A ureteric stent is a tube which drains urine from the Kidney, down the ureter, and into the bladder.
It may be placed to relieve obstruction from a stone or tumour, after a kidney stone procedure, or following surgery to repair your kidney or ureter.
A ureteric stent is temporary. It may be left in place for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months depending on the problem and your urologist’s recommendation. You should always have a follow up appointment scheduled following the placement of a ureteric stent.
Stent Related Symptoms
It is not unusual to have some symptoms after placement of a ureteric stent.
Some individuals may report bladder symptoms including:
– bladder discomfort
– increased urgency and frequency of urination
– burning sensation with urination
– blood staining of the urine and occasional small blood clots
Others may also feel mild discomfort in the back, especially during urination.
Stent related symptoms can be usually managed with restricting strenous physical activity, keeping hydrated (water is best), and over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (e.g. Advil). In some cases, you may be instructed to use a prescription medication such as tamsulosin (Flomax) or other drugs used for Overactive Bladder.
